Help Eliminate the Summer Learning Loss By Taking ACTion!
The Reading Connection
The summer learning loss can be detrimental for elementary-aged children and children of low-income families because the children are out of school and not continuing their learning.
During the summer months, most children are not taking supplementary classes to increase their knowledge. These 3 months can hold a child back from optimizing their time in school. On average, a student looses 2.6 months of grade level equivalency during the summer.
Grade level, subject matter and income are factors that are directly linked to summer learning loss.
Low-income youth are effected most. They can loose 2 or more months in summer learning loss in reading achievement.
The solution to this problem is to give children the opportunity to extend their learning into the summer in a fun a creative way. That is what The Reading Connection is doing in their We Are Readers summer reading program. We Are Readers allows volunteers to come in and read with children during the summer so they can continue their learning.
This week, ACTion Alexandria has launched an ACTion for We Are Readers. We want to get 100 books donated to the program. You can help us by taking action and buying books from The Reading Connection's Amazon.com wish list.
You can be part of eliminating the summer learning loss and helping children in Alexandria excel throughout the summer!
