2011 Holiday Sharing Program, Alexandria Honored By Alliance and Runaway Prevention Month: This Week's Latest ACTion

  • With the holiday season fast approaching the Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services is asking for help from residents.  You can assist them by participating in the 2011 Holiday Sharing Program, which provides gifts for those with disabilities, the elderly and low-income families.  This year has seen an increase-especially in the number of families signing up for the program-because of the dire economic situation.  For more information on how you can bring the light of the season into someone else's life, please visit the Holiday Sharing Program's website.
  • The America's Promise Alliance, founded by General Colin Powell, recently named Alexandria one of this country's "100 Best Communities for Young People."  Bestowed with the honor for the fourth time, the City is praised by the Alliance for the esteem with which it regards education and the effort put into various mentoring programs.  A City press release notes that the award  "fosters local pride, bolsters economic development and shines the spotlight on the people and programs that are building better communities."
  • November is Runaway Prevention Month.  It is estimated that 1.6 to 2.8 million kids run away from home each year.  Tomorrow at 1:30 PM the National Runaway Switchboard, a 24-hour crisis hotline, will host a live webcast explaining the affects that running away can have on youth and who is likely to run away.  To learn more, tune in.
