Shining a Spotlight on Pet Adoption
From January 27 to February 14, ACTion Alexandria is partnering with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and King Street Cats to ask residents to share their photos of their adopted pets and then help promote an animal for adoption from one of the shelters.
Walking down King Street, or any street in Old Town, it's impossible not to see at least a few Alexandrians walking with their pets. Coupled with Alexandria's status as the second most generous city in 2012, pet adoption is a matter of course for many local pet owners.
Now, ACTion is holding a photo contest for animal lovers in Alexandria. Participants are asked to post a photo of their adopted pet on ACTion with a short description of their furry friend. The top three winners of the contest will receive prizes from Andrea's Pet Services, Nature's Nibbles and Profeed Pet Nutrition Center. All contest participants are encouraged to sign up to be a Social Media Animal Ambassador for an animal who has been in either King Street Cats or the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria for a longer period of time in hopes of finding them permanent homes.

Social Media Animal Ambassadors may choose from a list of adoptable animals. Participants will then promote the animal on Facebook. The participant who gets the most 'likes' on his or her pictures or status updates about the animal will win a prize from The Southlawn Pet Spa, a new pet grooming facility located in Old Town that provides free grooming services for animals from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
Vivien Bacon, President of King Street Cats says, "When you adopt, you are actually saving two lives: the one you bring home and the second that will take its place in teh rescue." The goal of the photo contest is to shine a spotlight on pet adoption and also to help animals that have been in shelters for a longer time find loving homes.

On Tuesday September 4th, the transformation of one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings will begin – a full-fledged renovation! When I took over as Executive Director seven years ago, I set a long-term goal to ensure all our families lived in safe, comfortable homes. Over the years, out of sheer financial necessity, I was forced to take a “band-aid” approach to building repairs. Seven years later, with help from HomeAid Northern Virginia, Pulte Homes and the City of Alexandria, our long-term goal becomes reality.
