Congressman Moran Hosting 'Jobs Boot Camp', Scholarship Fund Ceremony, Student Gardens: This Week's Latest ACTion

The event will feature workshops, panel discussions and employers from fields as diverse as technology, health care and customer service. - T.C. students, teachers and parents celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria last Wednesday evening. More than 170 of T.C.'s graduating Seniors received scholarships, thanks to the Fund. Speakers at this year's ceremony included Superintendent Sherman and the Mayor, who was grateful to parents and the Fund for supporting this year's honorees. Congratulations Seniors!
- Alexandria City Public Schools is seeking volunteers to help tend to student gardens during the hot summer months. Spread throughout the school system, these gardens are a hands-on way to teach students about the environment and conservation. If you'd like to help preserve them, contact Wendy Sparrow.
- Read this moving profile of Ron Rust, a 41-year employee of the Boys and Girls Club on Payne Street. Though he recently retired, many of those touched by Rust's influence, said his lessons will stay with them for years to come. A number of those in attendance at his June 3rd retirement party remarked that he became more than their friend-he became a father figure.
- Last Friday, in cooperation with Community Lodgings, volunteers from Deloitte's Alexandria office transformed 2,000 square feet of dirt into a playground for the City's poor and homeless children. The effort was the focus of Deloitte's IMPACT Day, meant to encourage company employees to volunteer. In the words of Community Lodgings Development Director Jim Dempsey: "While Community Lodgings provides vital services to Alexandria’s most vulnerable families on a daily basis, projects like this have an incredible impact."
