Community Lodgings' Christmas Store

In 1987, Community Lodgings was founded by eight Alexandria churches with a mission to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and self-sufficiency. Subsequently, Community Lodgings purchased five apartment buildings in the Arlandria community of Alexandria.

Our “Transition-in-Place” Housing Program (formerly Transitional Housing Program) currently provides housing and intensive case management for up to 15 homeless families annually then offers participants an affordable apartment for rent upon program completion. We also provide affordable housing for an additional 34 low-income families. To further promote and address the mission of self-sufficiency, in 1998 Community Lodgings opened a Family Learning Center where THP clients (and other disadvantaged Alexandrians) could take courses in computer literacy and ESL.

In 2002, we expanded the Family Learning Center and added a Youth Education Program to provide afterschool services for at-risk children in Transitional Housing and throughout our community. In spring 2008 the space was doubled in size, allowing the program to expand and provide more instructional time for at-risk children and their parents. The youth program is set to empower the next generation to self-sufficiency. In response to the success of our education programs at the Fifer Family Learning Center, we have partnered with the school district and city to expand our programming to Brent Place in Alexandria's west end. Similar to the work we do in Arlandria, we are serving first through twelfth grade  students in afterschool programming.  Students  receive academic enrichment that is aligned with what they learn in school.  Additionally, time is designated at the end of the program  to support students with their homework. We currently serve 200 at-risk children per day, each receiving an average of 350 hours in academic and general support.

Each year, we put together a Christmas Store for the children in our programs. The children are given 'reward money' for achieving in our programs which they can use to purcahse gifts for their families at the Christmas Store. We wrap the gifts for them, and they take them home to give to their families. This year, we have 200 children enrolled due to the expanision at Brent Place. We will need MUCH MORE to cover this expansion...below is the suggested list. Any help would be appreciated!
