CANCELLED: 16th Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade
It is with great disappointment that the Del Ray Business Association announces that the 16th Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade scheduled for Sunday, October 28th has been CANCELLED for this year. After consultation with City officials and reviewing the potential for rain during parade times and strong winds and with our primary concern being for the safety and welfare of our neighbors and participants, the decision to cancel was reached.
Please note the following items that are still happening:
Distribution of Halloween Costumes
Distribution of Halloween Costumes to those children who otherwise would go without will still take place on Saturday, October 27th from 2-4pm at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue.
Best Decorated Home Awards
Judging and Awarding of prizes for the Best Decorated Home will still take place. Look for announcements of the winners on the “Visit Del Ray” facebook site, on list serves, the Del Ray Patch and newspapers.
Best Decorated Business Award
Judging and Awarding of the Best Decorated Business will still take place and be awarded at the November Del Ray Business Association Membership Meeting. We also would love to have you share photos, if possible, of what would have been your entries in the Best Decorated Stroller or Best Pet Costume. Please share or post on our Facebook site – “Visit Del Ray”. We will try to even recognize some of the top entries!!!
While this was a very difficult decision and the first time we have ever had to cancel, we are so appreciative of everyone’s support and enthusiasm for this annual event. Thank you to all those that have worked on the parade, that sponsored it or donated items. Please mark your calendars for next year’s parade on October 27, 2013.
Please be careful, stay safe and please keep our Emergency Responders and City Employees in your thoughts in the coming week.

On Tuesday September 4th, the transformation of one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings will begin – a full-fledged renovation! When I took over as Executive Director seven years ago, I set a long-term goal to ensure all our families lived in safe, comfortable homes. Over the years, out of sheer financial necessity, I was forced to take a “band-aid” approach to building repairs. Seven years later, with help from HomeAid Northern Virginia, Pulte Homes and the City of Alexandria, our long-term goal becomes reality.
A few weeks ago, a small group of "civic hackers" met in a conference room at ForumOne Communications in Alexandria to discuss what kind of applications they should build as a part of the Northern Virginia Brigade of Code for America.
