Mount Vernon Community School Playground Natural Playscape

The Mount Vernon Community School (MVCS) playground is on the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Uhler Avenue in the center of downtown Del Ray, Alexandria. This grant will help to make the playground more appropriate for children ages 2-5 years old.The school serves children K-5, but the playground is used in the weekday afternoons, evenings, and on weekends by siblings of students and by many community children younger than the school population. The school has 701 students, 56% of whom identify as Hispanic, 30% White, 11% African American, and 1% Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian, and 2% unspecified. With its high proportion of Hispanic students, we feel that the MVCS playground can help meet the goals of the initiative in addressing the higher risk of obesity among the Hispanic (32.9 %) children in Alexandria that you cite in your data. Specifically, we would like purchase materials to construct:

  • Natural playscape features, like tree stump tables and chairs, small bridges, and playhouses (similar to what the John Adams elementary school uses in their playground for 3-5 year olds).
  • Equipment to make a playspace for younger children in the grassy area near the fence that runs along Uhler.
  • Goal posts to redirect soccer games to grass field away from central areas where this play is a hazard to younger children.
  • Recycling bins to sit alongside trash bins.

The attached photo shows the North side of the MVCS running along Uhler and the area of the space where we would like to situate the new playscape and playspace.

Great Idea

The afterschool/weekend use of this facility continues to amaze me.  This is truly a community facility.  Adding features for younger kids will also provide some quieter places during the school day.

I also believe that there are younger preschoolers in the special ed program that would benefit from a playground geared towards their age group.  Great many people in the community use this playground.
