Replace the fluorescent lights in the Libraries with LEDs. This will reduce electricity costs by at least 50 per cent and the Libraries will be cooler in the summer

Ms. Apter. Thank you for your thoughtful Green Idea! You are correct that retrofitting conventional lighting technologies with Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology has the ability to reduce energy use and energy costs, and reduce library cooling loads (i.e. "the Libraries will be cooler in the summer"). Additional benefits include a higher color rendition (i.e. "brighter" and higher quality light distribution) which makes for a more pleasurable living, working, or browsing (if you're looking for books at the library) environment. You will be pleased to hear that the City of Alexandria has retrofit older lighting technologies with LEDs at Beatley Library and Duncan Library. If you have not had the opportunity to visit either location, I encourage you to do so. We have received many favorable comments. The City is currently in the contracting phase to retrofit lighting at Burke Library and a small number of remaining areas in Duncan Library. In both cases, the City will install LED lighting. We are also evaluating various LED products to accomplish retrofits of Barrett Library's lighting (Barrett Library has special lighting styles which require the City to be prudent and selective with the LED styles that will replace the current). You will also be pleased to know the City has also retrofit conventional lighting technologies with LEDs at the City's Public Safety Center and is in process to complete the same for other public buildings; all in effort to reduce the City's energy use, costs, and greenhouse gas emissions according to the goals outlined in the Eco-City Alexandria Charter, Environmental Acton Plan 2030, and Energy and Climate Change Action Plan. Again, thank you for your thoughtful Green Idea. We appreciate the support to make Alexandria greener through ACTion Alexandria's Green Ideas Challenge as well as many other Eco-City Alexandria initiatives.
