Inspire Virginia

Our mission is to transform young leders' inspiration into action that improves our communities and strengthens our democracy.

Between now and 2020, some 17 million Americans will graduate from high school. Currently, it is estimated that less than 10 % of students register to vote before graduation despite being eligible to do so. Yet, it is this generation that will assume long-term responsibility for the important economic, social and environmental decisions our country faces today. Quite simply, if they don’t vote, they have little influence on the decision-making of elected officials. The goal of Inspire U.S. through its emphasis on voter registration and civic action is to engage young adults in our democratic process so that their voices are heard at the local, state and national levels. After all, they are not “future” leaders…they are leaders of TODAY.Inspire Virginia is a program of Project High Hopes, a 501(c)3 operating foundation, which engages in innovative programs aimed at enhancing civic responsibility. The very foundation of our democracy is built upon the right of all citizens to express their views and actively participate in decision-making processes to improve our communities, state and country.  This strictly nonpartisan program works with high school juniors and seniors to prepare them for this responsibility as they approach the age when they first become eligible to vote. The three pillars of the Inspire U.S. program include:

  • Leadership -- students learn effective leadership, communication and organizing skills beginning with the summer Leadership Academy
  • Democracy -- students conduct voter registration efforts aimed at registering at least 85% of their school's senior class
  • Community -- students design and implement projects which positively impact issues that affect their communities
