Our mission is to develop academic skills, behaviors, and attitudes in academically motivated and underserved middle school children to improve their grades, test scores, attendance, and opportunities – resulting in acceptance to top high schools.   

Higher Achievement Wish List


Higher Achievement is a non-profit organization that provides middle school children from underserved areas year-round academic enrichment programs and preparation for top high school placement. The organization invests in talent and hard work and delivers over 650 hours annually of rigorous academic training during the most critical time in a child’s development: middle school.

Founded in 1975, Higher Achievement currently serves more than 600 scholars per year and, in partnership with local schools, operates achievement centers in Washington, DC; Alexandria, VA; Baltimore, MD and in the summer of 2010, Richmond, VA. The organization is expanding with plans to serve 2,300 scholars per year by 2015.

Interested in getting involved? Please see the following volunteer opportunities: 

Mentor: Work with a small group of scholars, typically 4-5, for 2 hours a week, 6-8PM, on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. Mentors can choose to teach either math, literature, or a seminar subject. 

Study Hall Aid: Help scholars with their homework from 3:30-5PM, on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.
