This week's featured organization is...Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture!

This week’s featured nonprofit is Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture. Arcadia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a more equitable and sustainable local food system in the Washington, DC area. Arcadia manages four programs to engage the community in food sustainability, education, and distribution.

Here are the highlights from each program:

Arcadia Farm: A four acre demonstration farm located on the historic grounds of the Woodlawn Estate. The Arcadia Farm provides a sustainable model of agriculture to new farmers, students, and the public through hands on community engagement.  During the summer, Arcadia Farm hosts Farm Camp for 120 children ages 6-12 to learn about farming and indulge in healthy nutritious food. This year, Arcadia had 21 scholarship students from Alexandria.

Mobile Market: A refurbished school bus that makes 9 weekly stops in low-food access neighborhoods, including two in Alexandria. Through The Mobile Market, Arcadia works to ensure that healthy food is available and affordable to everyone, regardless of their income. Last year, the Mobile Market, in its debut season, sold more than $43,000 in farm fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs and meat. 40% of the sales were from low-income customers using SNAP, WIC, and other federal assistance benefits.

Food Hub: A program in process that will work to get healthier, local food into school meals and the Washington, DC are market for sustainably produced food. The Food Hub will expand economic opportunity for regional, sustainable growers and increase market access to healthy, local food.

Farm to School Program: Connects schools with healthy local food for schools meals and provides hands-on food & farm education.
