This Week’s Nonprofit Spotlight Alexandria Jaycees

alexandria_jaycees_logoWhat Is Alexandria Jaycees?

The Alexandria Jaycees, a chapter of the Virginia Jaycees, works to advance the community and members of the Jaycees program while providing civic, social and business training and opportunities to young adults in Alexandria. While there are hundreds of Chapters of Jaycees around the world, members develop skills and promote their communities in the four areas of community service, leadership and individual development, networking and fundraising. Founded in 1940, the 100 adults aged 21 to 40 that comprise the Alexandria Jaycees commonly are referred to as the “junior chamber of commerce” because of their partnership with the U.S Junior Chamber. The Alexandria Jaycees strive to promote community service through leadership development of its members while continuing to be one of the largest and best chapters in Virginia.

Alexandria Jaycees’ Mission

The National objective of the Jaycees is to provide young people the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills through local community action and organizational involvement while expanding the Junior Chamber movement.

Program Highlights

Monthly Chapter Meetings

The Alexandria Jaycees meet on the 4th Monday of each month (except December, when there is no chapter meeting) at American Legion Post 24 located at 400 Cameron Street in Alexandria, at 7:30 pm. The monthly chapter meeting normally lasts about an hour. These meetings are your best way to meet the people in charge of projects that interest you, sign up for projects, and get involved.

Community Development

Jaycee chapters the world over are known for the good works they do in their communities, and our Community Development (CD) portfolio is no exception. Each month, we strive to offer our members several options to get involved in the Alexandria community. Doing so is at each member's discretion, but community involvement is often the reason that young professionals join the Jaycees. Examples of our involvement in Alexandria include:

  • ALIVE! food truck unloading
  • George Washington Birthday Parade
  • Rebuilding Together Alexandria
  • Labor Day Meals on Wheels
  • Goblin Games at the Del Ray Halloween Parade
  • Annual Holiday Shopping Tour for Underprivileged Children
  • stuffing USO Care Packages
  • blood drives
  • Individual Development

Whether for fun or for work, if there's something you've always wanted to do but never could find the right opportunity or forum in which to do it, you ought to check out our Individual Development (ID) Portfolio. Whether it is basics of car repair and maintenance, how to buy your first home, resume writing, a hike in the mountains on a summer afternoon, or white water rafting, the folks in the ID portfolio are there to help you learn!

Passport to Leadership Program

The Passport to Leadership Program, sometimes referred to as Degrees, is a national program of achievement for all Jaycees managed by the U.S. Junior Chamber. Jaycee members can complete requirements for up to 10 Degrees of Jaycees. Tenth Degree Jaycees can be called on as mentors and advisers of Jaycee chapters, and as trainers for Jaycee Presentations.

Socials & Networking

Many young professionals join the Alexandria Jaycees to meet new people - friends, business contacts, professional contacts, or more. We offer many opportunities - both structured and unstructured - to do just that. Visit our calendar for current socials and networking opportunities. The Alexandria Jaycees are members of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, which also offers many business and professional networking opportunities. For a current list of events (we pay "member" rates), visit the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce event calendar.

Financial Development

Any organization needs money in order to survive. Any good organization gets that money from outside sources, not from its members. We are a great organization! The representatives of Financial Portfolio are responsible for all the fund-raising activities to keep the chapter operating. If you'd like to learn more about why we raise money, how we use it, or contribute new ideas, this is the place to start. Typical projects include:

  • Alexandria Gives
  • Alexandria Birthday Celebration
  • Annual Christmas Tree Sales
  • Community Yard Sales
