Local Church Helps Relieve Hunger, Donating School Supplies and More: This Week's Latest ACTion

  • Recently 120 parishoners of Downtown Baptist Church aided the nonprofit organization, Stop the Hunger, in their effort to end starvation around the world.  10,000 meals made up of dried vegetables and rice were packaged by volunteers, then were shipped to various countries, including Haiti.  Volunteers ranged in age from three to 92, illustrating that everyone has the chance to make a difference in the lives of others.
  • Join Staples, DoSomething.org and Neediest Kids in the combined effort to obtain school supplies for children in need.  When shopping at your area Staples, you can donate supplies by dropping them into the Staples for Students collection boxes.  After Staples gathers your donated supplies, the store will give them to Neediest Kids, which will forward them to Alexandria City Public Schools to be passed out among students.  If you can, please donate today!
  • Mothers with young children are invited to attend an open house tomorrow at Christ Church from 10-11 AM.  The Church is host to the MOMS (Moms Offering Moms Support) Club of Alexandria.  The club's purpose is to offer stay-at-home mothers opportunities for support and fun activities.  To learn more about tomorrow's open house and becoming a member, check out the Alexandria Mom blog. 
  • The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria has a message for summer: Never leave your dog in a hot car! Chief Animal Control Officer Joy Wilson remarks, "A dog does not perspire like a person. It pants.  When the only thing a dog is breathing is hot air, brain damage sets in along with convulsions, seizures and then unconsciousness."  If you see a dog (or any animal) in distress, read this article to find out how you can help a four-legged friend.
