How You Can Help: Hurricane Sandy Relief

We at ACTion Alexandria hope that you are safe at home and with friends or family. Unfortunately, over a hundred thousand Northern Virginians lost power and too many had trees fall on their homes or cars. The entire East Coast was devastated by Hurricane Sandy - most notably in New Jersey and New York.
In times like these, it's important to band together and help those gravely affected by a natural disaster like this one. Below are ways that you can help families across the region:
- To help fellow Virginians, donate to the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund.
- Network for Good has a list of organization that are actively helping folks.
- Craig Newark of craigconnects and Craig's List is matching the next $25,000 donated to help Hurricane Sandy relief efforts through 5 charities already providing relief at Crowdrise.
- You can also sign up to volunteer locally with Volunteer Alexandria by contacting them at
If you know of any other local or regional nonprofits helping relief efforts, please mention them in the comments and we'll add them to the list.

On Tuesday September 4th, the transformation of one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings will begin – a full-fledged renovation! When I took over as Executive Director seven years ago, I set a long-term goal to ensure all our families lived in safe, comfortable homes. Over the years, out of sheer financial necessity, I was forced to take a “band-aid” approach to building repairs. Seven years later, with help from HomeAid Northern Virginia, Pulte Homes and the City of Alexandria, our long-term goal becomes reality.
A few weeks ago, a small group of "civic hackers" met in a conference room at ForumOne Communications in Alexandria to discuss what kind of applications they should build as a part of the Northern Virginia Brigade of Code for America.
