Alexandrians Respond to Boston Tragedy on Spring2ACTion – Alexandria’s Giving Day
24 hours of giving to bring thousands of dollars to support Alexandria charities and the Boston community
ALEXANDRIA, VA—On Wednesday, April 17, Alexandrians will have a new opportunity to prove their record-breaking generosity by contributing to their favorite nonprofit organizations during Spring2ACTion, Alexandria’s Giving Day, hosted by ACT for Alexandria.
Like the rest of the world, we were extremely saddened by the tragic events at the Boston Marathon. At times like this, we can feel powerless and uncertain about what to do. But there is something we can all do together to help.
We know that every day, but especially in times of tragedy, our Alexandria community pulls together to support those in need. ACT is partnering with our fellow community foundation in Boston to donate 5% of the amount raised for ACT to The Boston Foundation to support those impacted by this tragedy. Many Alexandria nonprofits participating in Spring2ACTion are doing the same.
During last year’s 24-hour event, 3,698 individuals gave nearly $320,000 to 72 participating nonprofit organizations whose missions range from feeding the hungry, educating children, caring for animals, to promoting the arts. This year, there are nearly 100 organizations participating aiming to raise $400,000!
Spring2ACTion will bring Alexandrians together for 24 hours of unprecedented giving using an online platform, www.Spring2ACTion.org. Alexandrians lead the region in online charitable giving.
“We are proud to partner with The Boston Foundation, our fellow community foundation, during this tragedy to show our support for the Boston community and those impacted by this tragic event. We are encouraging everyone to give what they can. Your donation on April 17 will make a real difference for the causes you care about,” says John Porter, executive director of ACT for Alexandria.
New this year, local businesses like Holy Cow Burger and Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray are donating a percentage of their proceeds on Spring2ACTion Day. Twenty-two additional local businesses will be giving a percentage of sales via Causetown, an online platform that makes it easy for businesses to support charities.
Spring2ACTion gives local nonprofit organizations the chance to compete for up to $30,000 in grants provided by ACT and presenting sponsor, the Bruhn-Morris Family Foundation. Every donation made on www.Spring2ACTion.org on April 17th helps participating nonprofits qualify to earn prizes, furthering the impact of donations.
