Alexandria History, ACPS Environmental Clubs and More: This Week's Latest ACTion
- Eager to learn about the history of Alexandria? Attend a unique performance entitled "An Afternoon with Sally Fairfax." It will take place on Sunday, June 12th from 2:00-3:30 PM at the Lyceum. The show will feature Beverly Brenda as Fairfax, who was a close friend of President Washington's and also a witness to the founding of our city.
- Read Carolyn Semedo's thought-provoking blog entry about the learning opportunities that environmental clubs, throughout the school system, have brought to students. The clubs began last year as part of an ACPS initative to place an environmental steward in each school. "The stewards engage students in sustainability-focused activities in their classrooms, cafeterias and beyond." The free clubs attracted many volunteer students who met after school on Tuesdays to discuss the importance of recycling and other matters related to protecting our planet.
- Developers are currently discussing plans for a new park in Potomac Yard in the coming years. Project liaison Zac Lette revealed a working model for the 21-acre park last Tuesday night at an office on Main Line Boulevard. Lette said he envisions the park, which will include athletic courts, playgrounds and a fountain, as "a center of activity for the City of Alexandria."
- The students of John Adams Elementary recently came together in an effort to help their Japanese peers, still recovering from tsunami damage. The school shipped over one thousand paper cranes made by the students, their teachers and parents to Japan, as part of Students Rebuild, sponsored by DoSomething.org. The Bezos Family Foundation, one of the many participants in the project, had agreed to donate $2 per crane. Due to the number created, the foundation raised the amount to $4 per crane, providing a grand total of $4,080 for relief!
