Butterfly - Pollinator Garden for Jefferson-Houston Pre K - 8 School

Butterfly-Pollinator Garden for Jefferson-Houston Pre K – 8 School The Jefferson-Houston PTA is creating a Butterfly – Pollinator Garden. This spring, the 7th Grade Science classes began the design of the Butterfly-Pollinator Garden by identifying plants to be included in the design of the space. The 7th grade Science classes will be responsible for this garden since the students study life science topics. They learn about the Taxonomic System and underlying plant divisions, they study the process of photosynthesis and how it connects to human life, and they dive into the flow of energy through ecosystems and the role of plants as producers in food webs. The Jefferson-Houston pollinator garden will allow hands-on experience with the content covered in science class, while emphasizing real-world connections as they examine the essential role students play in preserving and protecting our environment. The Butterfly-Garden will be available for all grade levels at J-H, Pre K thru 8th and for the larger neighborhood community, after school and weekends. It will be located on the SW corner of the building, adjacent to the parking lot and school sign. (see attached picture) It will be close to the water spigot, the five raised planting beds and the outdoor classroom constructed in the Fall of 2015. This location provides plenty of direct sunlight. We are requesting $2,000 for plant material. ACPS will prep the space in the fall and the PTA will organize a Middle School student and family workday to plant the garden on a Saturday in September or October.
