Try Something For Free!

There's not much that's free these days.
But wait. There is! All week next week is Try Transit week. And Thursday, September 22nd is Car Free Day. If you take the Try Transit pledge, you will be entered to win a pair of roundtrip tickets on Amtrak Virginia and a one-year transit pass. DASH Bus is hosting a Try Transit Week Contest with the question "Why Should People Try Transit?". Email your answer to to be entered and you could win two tickets to the Potomac Riverboat Company.

Oooo, more free stuff! If you take the Car Free Day Challenge, you could win an iPad, SmarTrip cards, a bicycle and more.

Free stuff. And I'm doing something good. But what does this really mean?

Try Transit week was designed to discourage solo driving and encourage everyone to use transit options, such as bus, train, carpooling and biking. If your employer supports telework, that's even better. Who doesn't want to work at home? Trying an alternative means to get around also saves time and money. The average commuter spends a week's worth of time sitting in traffic every year. I know some people who spend about 3 hours a day in the car commuting. Sounds fun, eh? Just think of the money you can save in gas and wear and tear on your car by carpooling, biking or busing to work.

Need help trying to figure out which bus or train to take to work? Check out Alexandria's Local Motion page. They have some great resources to help you get around. Still need help? Drop me a line a

Less cars on the road is less congestion. And less pollution that we're breating. Give transit a try next week and be sure to go car free on Thursday, September 22. If anything, do it for me. September 22 is my birthday and the greatest gift of all would be to change the way someone looks at commuting.
