This Week: Support The Center for Alexandria's Children Developmental Playgroups

End Date: Fri, 07/22/2011 - 11:59am

This week, we are helping the Center for Alexandria’s Children collect 50 items for their playgroups that provide critical developmental support to young children and parents in Alexandria.

Take the case of Erin* and her son Matthew*. After attending a CAC playgroup for 6 months, Erin worried about her 2 year old son Matthew being behind developmentally. She was particularly concerned that he wasn't talking as much as he should be. After confiding in playgroup leader Kelly*, Erin learned about available resources and got Matthew the speech therapy he needed.

Thanks to the support and relationships developed in their playgroup, Matthew is getting the help he needs to succeed before entering kindergarten and his mother Erin has become a powerful advocate for her child.

Research has shown that brain development in the first 3 years is critical to life-long academic outcomes and that a language and literacy rich environment is essential during these years. By providing a social environment with developmentally appropriate activities, the CAC developmental playgroups help address the gap in development of young children for some of the most vulnerable and underserved families in Alexandria.
