Choose To Reuse - Make Art, Not Waste

Share:

Everyone feels good about recycling, but did you know that reusing waste materials is even better for our community?  Reuse keeps goods and materials out of the waste stream and makes resources available to those who may not have them.  And, giving waste materials a second life through reuse is less expensive, uses less energy and yields less pollution than recycling programs.    Our Alexandria City based organization, UpCycle Creative Reuse Center, gives value to discarded materials and shows the community waste materials can be a resource for artistic expression.  We have a unique collection of items that are available for the public’s use as well as an art studio where community members create with reusable materials.   Project Idea:  UpCycle CRC will provide four free community reuse art days on select Saturdays between August 2014 and March 2015.  People of all ages, from children to adults, will create original works of art by using cast-off materials in new ways.   Project Location:  UpCycle Creative Reuse Center is located in the Del Ray neighborhood at 1712 Mt. Vernon Ave.     Project Cost:  $1500 for four free community reuse art days.  The project cost includes the staff and all of the materials needed to facilitate the art experiences for up to 30 people each day.         Project Benefits:  Participants will understand that waste materials are a low-cost resource for creative expression.  Furthermore, participants will feel the satisfaction of keeping good materials out of the waste stream, as they use creative thinking to reinvent the purpose of waste materials through the visual arts.
