Alexandria Commission for the Arts
From the entertainment offered in the City's taverns in its earlier days to the internationally renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center of today, the arts have played a significant role in our City's history.
To ensure the continued prominence of these arts, the Alexandria City Council created the Alexandria Commission for the Arts in 1984, to lead and advocate for cultural development within the City of Alexandria and surrounding region, to stimulate artistic excellence and make these arts accessible to all Alexandrians.
The Commission carries out this mission in several ways:
The Commission operates an annual granting program by which City and limited State funds are awarded to arts organ- izations and artists. Grants are awarded to:
• arts organizations and individual artists for projects of high artistic excellence;
• arts organizations for operating revenue, based on a record of excellence in management and community support;
• arts organizations for assistance in providing training to strengthen management; and,
• arts and other nonprofit organizations for special or unique one-time arts projects and/or ventures.
Collectively and individually, members of the Commission and its staff, subordinate bodies and consultants are available to arts organizations and artists for consultation on artistic, management and technical matters.
