The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association (TPSMA) is hosting a restaurant fundraiser on SUNDAY, MAY 18, 2014, from 4:00PM to 10:00PM (including dine-in, carry-out and delivery) at BERTUCCI'S in Old Town, Alexandria (725 King Street). The TPSMA will receive 15% of sales generated.     Background:  In 1917, over 70 women suffragists were imprisoned at the Occoquan Workhouse, then part of the Lorton Prison complex, for picketing the White House for the right to vote. The reports of inhumane conditions, beatings and force-feedings at the workhouse electrified the country and became the "turning point" in the struggle for ratification of the 19th Amendment. The TPSMA is a volunteer group dedicated to honoring the lives of these courageous women who fought for the right to vote. The TPSMA seeks to raise awareness and funds to build a memorial that reflects the strength of these women and the significance of their struggle. The memorial will be located at the Occoquan Regional Park (the site of the Occoquan Workhouse), and administered by the Northern Virginia Park Authority.Suppers for Suffragists is a fundraising campaign that organizes dinner events at restaurants and other eateries around the Washington, D.C. metro region in support of the TPSMA.     NOTE:  To have 15% of your receipt donated to the TPSMA, please visit the Suppers for Suffragists page on Facebook, print out the Bertucci's flyer and present it to your server upon arrival. The flyer is also available on EventBrite.
