Friends of Fort Ward bus tour, “The 17th Va. Infantry & the Maryland Campaign of 1862.” Tour leader David Heiby will trace the role of local troops in this key Confederate regiment during Robert E. Lee’s invasion of Maryland. The tour will begin by visiting two sites in Alexandria where members of the 17th are buried, then travel to South Mountain in Frederick, Maryland to visit sites related to that battle. The tour will continue to Antietam National Battlefield where participants will explore the role of the 17th Virginia during the September 17, 1862 battle which became known as the bloodiest single day of the war.
