CONGRATULATIONS NONPROFIT TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE WINNERS:

Alexandria Symphony Orchestra & RunningBrooke!

The National Day of Civic Hacking is coming to Alexandria!

Find out how your nonprofit organization can benefit from the expertise of coders, designers and developers. The nonprofit selected will win $100!

On Saturday, June 6, Code for Northern Virginia is hosting a hackathon during the National Day of Civic Hacking, from 8:00am-9:00pm at the Durant Center,1605 Cameron Street.

During the hackathon, technology specialists (such as coders and designers) combine forces with policy makers and nonprofit organizations to use technology to solve organizational challenges and issues in the community.

Code for Northern Virginia and ACTion invite nonprofit organizations serving Alexandria to submit your technology challenges or ideas. One submitted idea will be selected by a panel of judges to be pitched during the hackathon on June 6. Based on project pitches, a team of tech enthusiasts will then choose projects and work on developing solutions. The selected nonprofit will also win $100 from ACTion Alexandria!

Need an example? In February, The Women's Center, an organization dedicated to improving the well-being of women, men and families, needed an updated appointment scheduling system to help their therapists more efficiently make appointments with their clients. The Women's Center was selected to pitch their idea for an online scheduling system to Code for Northern Virginia, and about ten coders and designers chose to develop a new appointment scheduling system. (Below, coders work with Courtney from The Women's Center to determine what the new appointment scheduling system will include).

Other Examples of possible project pitches:

  • Develop a way to visualize and share your program data
  • Create an interactive map or directory to help individuals find your services
  • Develop a system to track shelter supplies
  • Improve the snapfresh dataset and presentation. (Snapfresh is a website that helps people locate fresh food sellers that accept SNAP).
  • Find a way to merge old donor data with new donor tracking systems
  • You could also submit an idea to find and consolidate data, such as a database of social service programs.

How do we get started?

What are your nonprofit's technology challenges or ideas? Submit your ideas by clicking on "Add Your Idea." DEADLINE IS MONDAY, JUNE 1
