  • Yesterday, Alexandria's fallen servicemen were honored during a ceremony at Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.  67 Alexandrians either gave their lives in Vietnam or are still missing in action as a result of that conflict.  Nearly 200 people attended the ceremony and were witnesses to a flag raising.  They also heard leaders of our military express their gratitude to soldiers of the past and to those who continue to ensure our freedom.
  • Read Jane Hess Collins' latest blog entry, focusing on a day spent at David's Place.  She writes a very enlightening overview of what she refers to as "the day component of the Carpenter's Shelter" and stresses the need for more volunteers.  Perhaps after reading her article, you'll consider donating some of your time to this irreplaceable resource for the City's homeless population.
  • ACPS Superintendent Morton Sherman recently appointed Madye Henson as the new deputy superintendent.  She will begin her duties on July 18th.  Henson has a long and varied background in public service in the D.C. area.  She was once president of community impact development for United Way Worldwide in Alexandria.  Of his selection, Superintendent Sherman remarked: "In searching for someone to fill this position, I was particularly keen on finding someone deeply connected to Alexandria's community and who understood our school division."
