  • According to the latest research, during the summer months, one child dies every five days as a result of drowning in a portable swimming pool.  The detailed study, conducted by Independent Safety Consulting in Rockville, Maryland and Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, stresses the importance of constant adult supervision in and around the water.  The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, based in Alexandria, supports the report's safety recommendations.
  • Check out this new article from Carolyn Semedo about alternatives to reusable plastic water bottles.  In it, Semedo talks at length about hydration packs.  They can carry more water than a bottle, and many other necessities as well.  Hydration packs, through often expensive, seem both eco-friendly and convenient.
  • Last Tuesday evening, the City Council recognized the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) for 65 years of serving the community.  The AWLA is a versatile organization.  It supports pet adoptions, population control, and oversees the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, which is able to accept just about any species.    AWLA Board Chairman Gordon Kromberg stated that "[he is] grateful to live in a community that supports our animals."
