My Homework Space

Over the past couple weeks, ACTion Alexandria has been working with The City of Alexandria, Samuel Tucker Elementary School, Community Lodgings, Bienvenidos, and Wright to Read to collect new and gently worn desks for children at Brent Place Apartments for a project called My Homework Space.

Brent Place Apartments is located on the West End of Alexandria and as of 2009, all of its residents had incomes under 60% of the area median income. For the families at Brent Place Apartments buying a desk for their child may not be financially possible.

Having a designated place to complete homework is an important part of being successful in school. Through the desk drive, children who receive a desk will make a homework pledge to complete their homework, keep their desk space clean, and read weekly.

Ms. Karen Morisato, Social Worker at Samuel Tucker Elementary School explains the importance of having a consistent place to study,

"The key to being successful at completing homework is to have a regular  time and place to get work completed.   Many of our students have neither.  My Homework Space will provide our students with the much needed "space" to complete their homework.  But it is much more than that.  Along with their space, students will make a commitment to work daily to complete their homework and to assure that it gets turned in to their teacher.  This project with help instill the sense of responsibility, confidence, and pride that students need to be successful in school!  Truly a worthwhile project!"

So far, $330 has been raised towards the purchase of new desks and several gently worn desks have been donated. Please be a part of academic success and help us meet our goal of collecting 35 new or gently worn desks for children at Brent Place Apartments.

Providing students a space to do their homework is essential in changing negative attitudes towards school.  By giving them a space we send a positive message about the importance of completing their school work.  When students have easy access to needed supplies it removes one of the barriers that children have that prevents them from completing the work.  This essential support will motivate our students to do their homework independently.  We are excited about this opportunity for our students!
