How Many 5th Graders Does It Take to Turn on a Light Bulb?
The answer: 45 or the entire 5th grade class at Charles Barrett Elementary School. But we're not talking about a literal light bulb - we're talking about creativity and imagination. With the help of Spring2ACTion, turn it on they did in Lightbulb - Illuminating Thoughts to Light Up Our World, a chapbook of poems by the class.
Funded by Spring2ACTion and families of students at Barrett, the DreamDog Foundation published Lightbulb to chronicle the lives of the 5th grade class - their hopes and fears - as they leave the 5th grade and go off to middle school.
The DreamDog Foundation strives to empower kids to believe in themselves and their dreams. Our goals include creating and distributing innovative multi-media educational material that builds self-esteem, creates opportunities for learning and growth in the areas of literacy and wellness. All print and multimedia educational materials that we produce support child empowerment theory, enhancing children’s ability to solve their own problems and to realize that the real magic lies within us all.

Come help kick off inauguration weekend with a celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and volunteer! On Saturday, January 19th, hundreds of volunteers will assist nonprofit agencies providing services to people in need as well as provide educational activities to children and youth. In Alexandria, volunteers are needed to assist children and teenagers creating a story book. Volunteers are needed for set up, registration, implementing arts and crafts projects, clean up, and much more. Adult volunteers are needed to facilitate discussion groups with a smaller group of children. Interested adults should contact Jason Ellis at
