The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities conducted a Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment Survey during May and June of 2011. The purpose of the survey was to establish priorities for the future development of parks, recreation, cultural facilities, programs and services within your community.

The Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) has been conducting counts of bicyclists and pedestrians at locations throughout the City of Alexandria as part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.  Our first set of counts, in July 2011, showed large numbers on the Mt. Vernon Trail and at locations that are connected to that trail by paved trails or bicycle lanes.  As new facilities open, we hope to see numbers rise all over Alexandria.

The Sierra Club is seeking passionate students concerned about the environment, especially with specific interest in climate change and/or skills with online and social media, to intern in our Alexandria office this fall.

This week the Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition will launch a Road to Clean Energy Tour to draw attention to the health risks of air pollution from coal-fired power plants. The tour will hold events at stops in Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Alexandria, Va., respectively.
