Harvesting Human Potential: The Alexandria Seaport Foundation

Doing Big Things with Small Boats! That's the tag line of the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, a local charity that helps helps at-risk youth turn their lives through the building of boats. Full-time apprentices earn their GED and prepare for a career in the building trades. Seaport also provides a vocational training program in green construction, a summer program, and an after school program. Through the Seaport Foundation's unique programming, they are able to provide youth, families, community groups, and schools with meaningful educational, social, and recreational experiences.

Alexandria Seaport Foundation's Lastest Project: A Vision of Two Dories

What's a dory? I'm glad you asked! The Alexandria Seaport Foundation produced a great video explaining the origin of Potomac River dory boats and how Seaport is going to use their construction to help 8,000 young people by the time the boats are launched in 2012.

According to Joe Youcha, Executive Director of the Seaport Foundation, the project brings together all of the foundation's present and planned programming. It provides work and an educational context for their apprentices.

To help 8,000 more young people with the Two Dories project, the Alexandria Seaport Foundation needs to raise $50,000 per boat, or $100,000 in total this year. Please help!
