Commemorating Veterans Day in Alexandria

Next Tuesday, November 11th, Alexandria and the rest of America will pause in reflection for Veterans Day.  With an estimated 800,000 people expected to attend Washington DC’s “Concert for Valor”, perhaps going to a local event in Alexandria would make for a less crowded holiday. Luckily, there are several options for Alexandria residents to consider.

The city of Alexandria Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department and “Friends of Rocky Versace” will be hosting the 13th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center.  The hour-long ceremony will begin at 1:00 pm and to honor all veterans.  The guest speaker will be Brig. Gen. (US Army, ret.) Jack Nicholson, former Secretary, American Battle Monuments Commission.

Additionally, several museums in the area will be open and offering free admission to current and former military members. The Alexandria Black History Museum will host a free lecture on African American involvement in World War I from 11:00 am -12:30 pm.  Please contact the museum at 703.746.4356 to reserve your seat.  George Washington’s Mount Vernon is also waiving the admission fee for military personnel and presenting a community concert by The Harmony Heritage Singers at 11am.

Residents who have to work on Veterans Day but still want to participate in the spirit of the holiday have several options throughout the week.  On Saturday, Nov. 8th, the public is invited to attend free tours through Alexandria’s historic Fort Ward.  Interpreters will portray Civil War veterans returning to Fort Ward and reminiscing about their experiences. Tours begin in the Museum at 10 am and 2 pm and are scheduled to last about 90 minutes each.  Area restaurants are also getting into the spirit by offering a 10% to 20% discount to military members throughout the week.  A list of participating restaurants can be found here.

Thank you to all of the current and former military members. We deeply appreciate and recognize your commitment to our country and community.
