Announcing the Playspace Improvement Grants: Improving play for everyone in Alexandria

Alexandria, VA - Project Play, an initiative of the Alexandria Childhood Obesity Action Network (ACOAN) and ACTion Alexandria, is pleased to announce the Playspace Improvement Contest!  This contest is an opportunity for eligible apartment complexes in Alexandria to apply for matching funds to improve on-site playspaces and playgrounds.

The Playspace Improvement Contest can provide a maximum of $5,000 in funding to go towards playspace renovation or new playspaces.  The funding has to be matched by the contest winners, and applied toward improving on-site play areas for children. Funding will focus on play needs primarily for children ages 2-5.

Uses of funds can include: play equipment for 2-5 year-olds (such as climbing structures, slides, swings, spinning toys, ride-on toys, play table, play stores, covered sandboxes, see-saws, balance beams, stepping stones, tree stump steps, wooden platforms or stages, small climbing boulders, and more), playground accommodations (such as benches, picnic tables, trash cans), and playspace signs and trails.

The deadline to participate in the contest is Wednesday, April 17th.

The Playspace Improvement Contest is part of an effort by Project Play to engage private multi-family property owners in the provision of high-quality and easy to access playspace across Alexandria.  Properties in Arlandria and Alexandria’s West End will be particularly prioritized as they were identified as areas with a high play need in Alexandria’s 2012 Playspace Assessment.

Project Play brings local organizations and Alexandria residents together to focus on increasing play opportunities in the City of Alexandria in order to combat the city’s high childhood obesity rates.
