Announcing the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge



How would you make Alexandria a greener, more sustainable community?
Eco-City Alexandria, Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission, and ACTion Alexandria have teamed up to launch the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge. We asked Alexandria citizens to share their ideas for creating a greener, more sustainable community.
All the ideas have been submitted and now it's time to vote for the winners!
Prizes
The best three citizen ideas will win a total of $500 in cash prizes and a chance at $2,000 in mini grants to turn their Green Idea into a reality.

How Do I Vote?
- Login or register for your ACTion Alexandria account.
- Go to the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge and click "Add Your Vote" under the idea or ideas you like.
- Vote for your own Idea and ask others to vote for it as well.
- You can vote 3 times in the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge. You can allocate your 3 votes any way you wish. Online voting is one factor used to pick the winners.
Voting ends Friday April 6, 2012
Judging Criteria
The best ideas will:
- Take under $1,000 to implement
- Be community or neighborhood focused and grassroots oriented
- Not require City resources to implement.
- Special consideration will be given to ideas that target and/or incorporate youth.
Prizes will be awarded by the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge panel of judges based upon the number of votes received on ACTion Alexandria and how relevant and actionable an idea is.
Up to an additional $2,000 in mini grants will also be awarded to ideas that can be turned into community action. The Alexandria Green Ideas panel of judges will work with citizens who submitted action able ideas to create an implementation plan. Projects that receive grants must be completed by December 31st, 2012.
*Anyone aged 18 can submit an idea in the Alexandria Green Ideas Challenge.

Come help kick off inauguration weekend with a celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and volunteer! On Saturday, January 19th, hundreds of volunteers will assist nonprofit agencies providing services to people in need as well as provide educational activities to children and youth. In Alexandria, volunteers are needed to assist children and teenagers creating a story book. Volunteers are needed for set up, registration, implementing arts and crafts projects, clean up, and much more. Encourage business, schools, government and citizens to purchase Sensor Switches for all restrooms and common areas in the City of Alexandria. How many of these lights stay on when there is no one present?We all could save big money on an annual basis. Also look for lights that are on at night that are being wasted, and de-lamp them. Another great way to conserve electricity and save money.
